Breaking News: Apple AirPower wireless charging mat has been cancelled

We've been checking for the Apple AirPower release date every day, but there's no more need to do that anymore, as Apple has cancelled the project altogether.

AirPower was the wireless charging mat that Apple revealed a little over a year and a half ago at its iPhone X launch event on September 12, 2017 – it's been 563 days.

Apple's Qi charger was supposed to charge up to three devices at once anywhere on the mat, so you could wireless charge all of your Apple devices, say, iPhone XS Max, Apple AirPods 2019 and Apple Watch 4.

However, over the last 18 months, we haven't heard much about the AirPower mat, except for a smattering of rumors that the company was having trouble with quality control.

Today, Apple spoke up about its long-delayed AirPower in an emailed statement to TechCrunch. “After much effort, we’ve concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project," said Dan Riccio, Apple’s senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.

"We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward."
