Apple has once again refreshed and improved the MacBook Air, and the 2020 model represents the biggest upgrade we've seen in quite a while, easily making it one of the best laptops in the world, and certainly the best affordable MacBook ever made. Apple has now included the latest 10th generation Intel processors, and for the first time you're able to get a MacBook AIr with a quad-core CPU, which makes a big difference when it comes to perfomance.

You also get more storage as well, with Apple doubling the amount the base model comes with to 256GB. While it's can't compete with the raw power of the MacBook Pro 16-inch (above), this is by far the best MacBook Air the company has ever made. Best of all, Apple has once again lowered the entry price, so you're getting a more powerful laptop for cheaper. What's not to like about that?

Beyond the Acer Swift 3's modest exterior, you'll find an excellent laptop that boasts plenty of power for work and study. The Swift 3 (not to be confused with the Switch 3 another laptop from Acer) is an inexpensive laptop; however, that plain chassis is all-aluminum and packed with beefy components. 

In terms of performance, it gets surprisingly close to the far more expensive Microsoft Surface Laptop. Its display is a little lower-res, but the two are otherwise strikingly similar - other than the price. 

This laptop is incredible to use as well, with its roomy trackpad as well as its backlit keyboard that offers a comfortable typing experience with decent travel. If you're going to be writing a lot – whether you’re traveling or at the office, this is one of the best laptops for writing on offer.

The Acer Chromebook R11 is probably the best cheap laptop around at the moment, and it's a great laptop for wirters. Like the Acer Chromebook Flip higher up this page, this laptop runs Chrome OS so does away with all the overheads that Windows brings. Consequently it's able to run nice and fast on less powerful components, which means a very cheap price! Its touchscreen is decent, though it's only HD, and it will flip to become a tablet too. What's more, it'll run practically all day thanks to its excellent battery life. So if you're looking for a capable but very cheap laptop that you can whip out and begin writing on, then this one is your best bet.

Debuting earlier this year, the brand new 2020 Dell XPS 13 not only comes packed with the very latest processors from Intel, but also a brand new bezel-less ‘Infinity Edge’ display, which is very much the selling point here. 

Performance is fantastic, as you'd expect from the XPS line, but overall you're getting a slightly slimmer, thinner, and sexier package here, albeit at a slightly higher asking package on the basic specs variant.

Prices generally start at around the $899 / £999 mark for the basic specs but Dell often does seasonal sales around July, as well as Black Friday and Cyber Monday. While Dell doesn't tend to be as generous on these brand new models as the older fare, you can still sometimes pick them up for around $100 / £100 cheaper than their standard price, if you're lucky.

While it's still sporting the thicker bottom bevels, the 2019 Dell XPS 13's screen is essentially the same quality as the new entry, making it more of an aesthetic upgrade rather than a purely functional one. You're still getting 10th generation Intel Core i5 / i7 processors here as well and often for around $100 / £100 cheaper than a similarly equipped 2020 model. 

Altogether you can pick up a 2019 XPS 13 deal for as little as $700 / £800 if you're lucky and we definitely recommend checking out this great ultrabook - especially around Black Friday and Cyber Monday, where you can often pick up a steal.

Unfortunately being the best comes with a hefty asking price - $1,200 / £1,200 on the base models in this case, which very much puts them above the XPS 13 in the price leagues.

It’s highly portable and, though the screen disappoints a little by being a touch dull, perfectly usable. If you can find the Kindle Paperwhite for under US$129/£120/AU$199 you're getting a good price. The new entry-level Kindle 2019 model will surely see some discounts soon on its $89.99/£69/AU$139 price. The top of the line Kindle Oasis model prices start at $269/£229/AU$389 and rarely drop lower.

Amazon's latest take on the entry-level Kindle was given a boost for 2019 by including a built-in light, meaning you don't have to get the Kindle Paperwhite if you want to read your Kindle at night without any extra lighting in the room. It's a neat upgrade, but it has pushed the starting price up a little compared to the 2016 starting Kindle. The Amazon Kindle with a built-in light starts at $89.99 / £69.99 / AU$139.

The screen itself though is still only 167 ppi, opposed to the Paperwhite's higher resolution of 300 ppi. The Paperwhite (which is now waterproof and designed with a flush screen against the bezel) does get some chunky discounts at multiple points of the year, so if you time it right, you may not have to pay much more to get that instead of this basic (if improved) Kindle. Amazon updated the excellent Kindle Paperwhite in 2018. This was no mere by-the-numbers update with a deep dive on the internal spec sheet required to spot the differences either (let's leave that to the MacBooks right?). The newest Paperwhite is so good you might be tempted to ditch the previous version, which we still love very much.

The backlit screen is now flush with the bezel, meaning no more places for dust or hair to get stuck. And part of the reasoning behind this upgrade is to ensure the Kindle Paperwhite is now a waterproof ereader, just like the far more expensive (but absolutely beautiful) Kindle Oasis. The cheapest model now has double the storage capacity at 8GB which is handy if you're reading image-heavy books like graphic novels/comics. And it's 20 grams lighter. That extra space is also handy for audiobooks, a new addition to the Paperwhite that you can take advantage of via bluetooth speakers/headphones.

The latest Kindle Paperwhite prices start at $129.99/£119.99/AU$199 but we see significant discounts at multiple times of the year, so it's always worth hanging on for a better deal.

The Kindle Kids Edition takes the 2019 entry-level Kindle (mentioned earlier) and adds a bunch of assuring child-friendly features. It comes with a cover as standard along with a nice 2-year warranty that covers any form of breakage (excellent for clumsy kids). The Kindle Kids Edition isn't waterproof like the Paperwhite, but the extended warranty has you covered there. The built-in dictionary (just hold your finger on a word) is a fantastic learning resource and there's a vocabulary builder option too.

A partner app allows parents to track how much time their children have been reading along with what they're reading. There are no games or web browsers included on this Kindle, so you never have to worry about them straying from their book. You also get a year of free access to over 1000 child-friendly titles and other ebooks can be added from the Kindle store. With double the storage of the cheapest Kindle at 8GB, you'll have plenty of space for them too.

Some parents may want to consider the cheaper standard Kindle instead if their child is arguably getting a little old for the safety features (they might keep the same ereader for years remember) or if the restrictions seem a bit much for ebook content. On the plus side, you can unlock the extra features, making it a standard Kindle if you decide to do so via a PIN code. The Kindle Kids Edition is priced at $109 in the US and £99 in the UK.

Amazon has just updated the previous-gen Kindle Oasis to an all-new version. The Kindle Oasis (2019) prices start at $249.99/£229.99/AU$399. It isn't all that different from the 2017 model in all honesty but that one is being phased out of stores now.

The main new feature is an amber-shade option for the screen background. This 'warm' light has a much more natural feel, like an old paperback. It looks rather lovely and is less of a strain on your eyes, especially if you're reading at night and wanting to wind down. 

Otherwise, this is the same beautifully-designed waterproof luxury e-reader as last time out. Those page turns buttons are a neat feature though as they keep the screen clean and work much more accurately than the sometimes errant screen taps/swipes. There's no getting around the initial asking price is seriously high though, meaning the Paperwhite is still much easier to recommend.

The second iteration of the Kindle Oasis costs US$249/£229/AU$389 for the cheapest Wi-Fi version. This is an upgrade over the older Oasis (which is no longer available) and a huge improvement. It's 15% cheaper, bigger and was also the first waterproof kindle (but the Paperwhite now has that feature too). The Kindle Oasis was also the first kindle to support Aubidle audio books, although you'll need a pair of bluetooth wireless headphones to use this feature as there's no built-in speaker or 3.5mm headphone port. The Kindle Oasis ereader's 7-inch screen makes it the largest of the Kindle brands and tempting for readers wanting to view a larger page, meaning you won't have to turn pages as often. The page turn buttons are given a wider bezel on the side than the now-discontinued Kindle Voyage, making it easier to hold one-handed - the screen will flip over to accommodate left-handed readers too. The considerably cheaper Paperwhite models are excellent alternatives and feature the same screen resolution. That larger screen and waterproofing for peace of mind are pretty tempting though. On the plus side, prices should start to drop now that there's a newer model available (see above).

What do 'Special Offers' mean on the Kindle listings?

When looking at a Kindle ereader listing, whether it's on Amazon's website, or a different retailer, you'll often see 'includes special offers' in the title or item description. Choose 'without special offers' and the price will jump up £10/US$20.

Essentially, these Special Offers act as Amazon-based screensaver-style advertisements on your Kindle device. So when you pop your Kindle on from sleep mode you'll see an ad for a book on Amazon's Kindle store, or maybe a third party ad.

Annoying right? Actually, I opted for the Special Offers (I do love a cheap deal), and it's not bothered me one bit. You can swipe the ad away easily (no trying to find the tiny X icon here) and get on with your reading straight away. When in sleep mode, the ads cycle on the screen, but they're not illuminated and they don't seem to consume any power. They don't slow anything down when powering on the device after shutdown either. The ads are replaced with generic artwork if you have them removed.

Seeing as these ads don't interfere with the experience at all, I'm glad I didn't spend the extra money to block them. Hey, some of the sales have been worth clicking through to. If you really don't like them though, you can always pay the difference at a later date to get them removed. So we'd opt for the cheaper 'includes special offers' option first.

The best Microsoft Surface Go deals and prices in May 2021

We've rounded up the latest Microsoft Surface Go deals so you can score a discount on Microsoft's cheaper tablet device. Now that the Surface Go has been out a little longer, we're starting to see retailers bring the prices down more often, which is great news for you bargain fans. 

If you've been eyeing up the line of Surface Pro tablet/laptop convertibles but thought they were a bit expensive, or too big to carry around a lot, the Surface Go is the cut-price diminutive alternative that'll allow you to save some serious cash while getting that super cool form-factor.

The Surface Go 2 is the newest version of the Surface Go tablet, improving on the previous version's power and kitting out the larger 10.5-inch display with a better battery life, dual studio mics, and thinner bezels. You're getting all of that at the same MSRP as the older model, however it's worth noting that price drops have been far steeper on the original tablet so you'll likely find a lower price there. 

That said, you'll only find those discounts on the larger 128GB model - the original 64GB device is rarely on the shelves these days, so if you're looking to spend under $400 the Surface Go 2 is for you. However, when it comes to the 128GB device, it might be worth springing for the extra processing power and quality of life features in the Go 2, considering there's usually between $100 and $50 in the price difference between the two models.

The original Surface Go is still available, though you'll struggle to find stock of the cheaper 64GB model. If you're after 8GB RAM and a 128GB SSD, however, you'll find a lower price here than on the newer Surface Go 2. The screen is downgraded a little and you're not picking up as much processing power here, but if you're after an everyday tablet for streaming, browsing the web, catching up on emails and some light Windows work, the original Surface Go is one of the most cost-effective ways to do so. 

Is the Surface Go price worth it?

Even if you've found the cheapest of Surface Pro deals, you'll still be a way off from the Surface Go price. That's why many who can't quiet justify the Pro's prices can easily get the job done with a cheaper Surface Go tablet. 

You are dropping down in performance here, but the lowest price you'll find on a Surface Pro is $749 (around $699 on sale). Considering you're still getting that premium form factor, a large 10-inch display, and a processor that will see you through everyday activities with ease it's worth it to scale down if you don't think you'll need all those Pro features. 

Is the Surface Go a laptop?

By itself the Surface Go is a tablet (albeit a tablet running full Windows 10 like a laptop), which is the tricky business of buying into Microsoft's Surface range. You have to pick up the Type Cover keyboard separately to fully transform your device into a laptop replacement. The costs do start to add up here, but if you can find Surface Go deals that offer a keyboard bundled into the final price you've hit a great offer. If you're looking for a tablet for lighter browsing, checking your emails, and catching up on Netflix on the go, this is an ideal budget option. 

The 10-inch does also offer an interesting proposition, but we wouldn't pay the full $249. You'll easily find Samsung Galaxy Tab A deals dropping this down to $199, which is an easy price to pay for a larger screen and boosted battery.

Is the iPad Mini price worth it?

If you're going for performance and display quality, the iPad Mini might not be the tablet for you. However, if you prefer that smaller form factor over the larger 10.1-inch devices making up the rest of Apple's tablet line up, then the iPad Mini is your only option.
